What is terakoyaCloud?
“Terakoya” were traditional community schools in Japan during the Samurai era, from the late 17th to the mid-19th century.
The word “tera” means “temple,” and while some Terakoya were held in Buddhist temples,
many were also run in private homes or local community spaces.
They were small, informal learning spaces where children and adults studied together, guided by a local teacher.
Unlike modern schools, Terakoya did not emphasize grades, exams, competition, or institutional credentials.
Learning was practical, personal, and closely connected to everyday life—reading, writing, arithmetic, and moral thinking.
What made Terakoya unique was that learning was shared rather than standardized.
Everyone progressed at their own pace, and teaching was built on human relationships, not rigid systems.
This approach to learning still matters today.
In a world where education is increasingly measured by numbers—scores, rankings, and followers—
Terakoya offer a different vision: learning as a shared journey, not a competition.
TerakoyaCloud aims to bring this spirit into the digital age.
It is an online Terakoya focused on music, where people around the world can learn, share, and grow together.
By using the internet, TerakoyaCloud removes borders and classrooms, while preserving the core idea of Terakoya:
everyone is a student, and everyone is a teacher.
We are building this. If this idea resonates with you, stay with us.
